Overview
Doug is a principal with 20 years’ legal experience focused on intellectual property. He is uniquely skilled at harvesting, prosecuting and monetizing patents portfolios, clearing products, negotiating IP agreements, succeeding on U.S. appeals and collaborating with foreign counsel during opposition proceedings.
Doug has drafted hundreds of original patent applications, primarily spanning the mechanical, medical, electrical, and computer arts. He has also prepared dozens of right-to-use and invalidity opinions with risk-balanced judgment.
For many clients, Doug has conducted IP audits and created policies and procedures for protecting their patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets.
Doug served as in-house, on-site counsel during a 6-month secondment at Nike, Inc., in Beaverton, Oregon. In this role, Doug harvested inventions at Nike, while liaising with marketing and management, and managing outside counsel.
Doug has repeatedly been named a Leading Lawyer in Illinois by Leading Lawyers magazine (a distinction earned by fewer than 5% of Illinois Lawyers), and from 2015-2017 was named an Emerging Lawyer by Emerging Lawyers magazine (a distinction earned by the top 2% of up-and-coming attorneys in Illinois under age 40 or practicing less than 10 years at the time).
Before joining Vivacqua Crane, Doug worked at a national law firm headquartered in Washington, DC, and was a Shareholder at a large IP boutique in Chicago, IL.
